Japan's Escort Carriers
Anonymous writes "
Japan is universally recognized as a major carrier power during World War II when the Imperial Japanese Navy possessed the most powerful carrier force in the world. It was with this force, coupled with well designed aircraft and excellent combat pilots; that Japan was able to roam free on the vast Pacific Ocean during the first months of the war. The force continued to be the backbone of the entire fleet well into late 1942 when attrition, mainly experienced aviators, began taking its toll. By late 1943 the once vaunted Japanese carrier force was a shell of its former self. Now relegated to decoy and even suicide missions, the carrier force was powerless to stop the United States Navy’s drive towards the Japanese home islands.

The notion that a country could develop and eventually field an aircraft carrier ask force is seen by most observers as a major step to claim power projection beyond that country's international borders. It is an indicator of the country's naval force capability.
